Hey all, Just wanted to put this up somewhere before the iron gets cold. If we can work on putting these together slowly, it would be easier than trying to leap through flaming hoops a few weeks prior to next war.
Any advancement on the Pattern/layout/construction? Perhaps a shopping list of materials to gather before we have a giant shield-n-pizza party? _________________ ~Kaz |

And for those of us more vertically challenged... plastic or pneumatic wheel.... with knobbies or smooth? Just kidding, I too would be interested in getting it together at a more relaxed pace, and "fee schedule"! _________________ Squire and Yeoman in service to His Grace

Gunnar is making a wood and fiberglass shield prototype. I'm just looking at other ideas just in case.
The big cost with Aluminum in 42" is that nobody stocks 42" wide. 48" is the industry standard. So we would have to pay for the entire 48" of aluminum which increases the square inches.
Bokalo just told me that he can do 2024 T4 at 42" wide for $100 each. They would be round with a round hole cut in them.
I've gotten quotes from Cut2SizeMetal, Windrose and Bokalo and Bokalo is the least expensive. Bokalo is also local and will give us his awsome repair and replacement policy.
So the Aluminum is $100 plus center boss, edging, paint, and shipping makes this option look like under $200 for each finished shield.

Played with the prototype. Eion, you need not fear the use of a cherry picker to haul them around. Other than adding a third measure of glass and resin, and edging, the weight was insubstantial.

Hey guys... many of you saw the new war shield at coronation, for those of you who didn't, here are the specs:
- two 1/4 sheets of luan wood
- epoxy fiber glass(NOT ACRYLIC) on the outside and between two sheets
- Baldar plastic center boss
- pvc flex hose for edging
42 inches of awesomeness costs about $95 for everything. We have the one made now and will have five more made for panhandle. Center bosses have already been purchased. The prototype has been tested vigorously and has shown no signs of failing, and with the 3rd layer of fiberglass I plan on adding to the back it should be even better with no real weight added. |
